CAP’N JAZZ ARE REUNITING!!! [Curiosities #40]

Look at those little fuckers, complete with drum stands in the background.

Cap’n Jazz – “Oh, Messy Life” MP3/download

Holy god, just got it straight from the horse’s mouth that Cap’n Jazz, the prepubescent outfit of Tim Kinsella and Davey Von Bohlen, is REUNITING!!

This is more exciting than an Owls/Ghosts & Vodka/Make Believe/Promise Ring/Joan Of Arc reunion (oh wait, the last one isn’t even broken up … right?) and twice as exciting as the Police reunion.

Hell, I’m not sure these boys have equaled Cap’n Jazz anyway; it was so off-the-cuff, so immature, so fleeting … you just knew they wouldn’t last, and they didn’t …

Is this gonna be cool or kinda sad like the Germs reunion? These guys are still pretty young so I don’t see why it shouldn’t ROCK ME AMADEUS!!! More to come; for now enjoy the MP3/download and video!

Gumshoe’s review of White Denim/Brazos on Tiny Mix Tapes

PREVIEW new (?) White Denim EP Let’s Talk About It HERE …

In case you haven’t yet heard White Denim, listen to the two tracks above and you’ll find yourself BEGGING for more.

Luckily, I have some more sweet, stiff White Denim for ya: A review I wrote for Tiny Mix Tapes on a recent show WD played with Brazos at Larimer Lounge.

Excerpt:

So sick they should give H1N1 shots at the door, White Denim are a sexless three-piece with the chops of Comets On Fire, the drugganaut bluster of Black Mountain, the ham-fisted proto-punk power of early Melvins, and the endless-jam power of fellow power-trio Titan

Enjoy the sweet, sweet denim …

“Get Out” by Velvet Davenport ft. Ariel Pink and Gary War [Daily MP3 #21]

Blood? Boobs? OK? OK!

Velvet Davenport ft. Ariel Pink and Gary War – “Get Out”

When I first locked Velvet Davenport‘s “Get Out” into my browser I thought, “Oh, man. Another drum machine-with-guitar album with low-key vocals and enough echo to choke a camel. Great.” And that’s definitely what it is.

I’m not even going to mention Velvet Underground.

But “Get Out” ain’t so bad. For all the Kurt Vile-ness of it all there are a few decent flourishes and a catchy snap to it. It’s obvious some thought went into this. Think Ganglians‘ whimsy, Little Girls‘ drum machine, hazy punk riffs, “ahhh ahhh” chants and pleasantly tossed-off-but-not-tossed-off vocals …

If I’m not mistaken I got an album full of stuff akin to Velvet Davenport recently: Art MuseumsRough Frame (though I liked the Moon Duo album a lot more; it owns). There’s certainly a lot of drum-machine worship/home-guitar workouts/muffled-echo vocals going around, and … well, someday it’s going to get old.

It hasn’t yet, though. To be honest I think the live clip below is even better than the MP3 but hey: you decide, mofo.
